Greatwide driver earns
wings as Highway Angel

Dec 13, 2010 10:33 AM

Antonio Cooper, an Oklahoma City OK-based driver for Greatwide Logistics Services, has been named a Highway Angel by the Truckload Carriers Association. Highway Angel recognition is awarded for a driver’s “good deeds,” ranging from simple acts of kindness to heroic life-saving efforts.

While returning from a run the night of October 8, 2010, Cooper noticed the car in front of him swerving back and forth across the road and sometimes going into the median. As the car began to veer off the road, he pulled his truck alongside the car and blew his horn, which awoke the sleeping passenger so he could reach over and bring the car to a halt.

The driver was a teen-ager who was having a seizure, and the passenger was his brother. Cooper pulled his truck over and got out to help the stricken teen-ager by holding his tongue so he wouldn’t swallow it. At the same time, Cooper called 911 and waited for paramedics to arrive.

“Antonio brings a high degree of character and professionalism to the trucking industry,” said John Simone, president and chief operating officer, Greatwide Logistics Services. “His courage and commitment to safety—both his own and that of other motorists—is what saved the lives of those two young men. We are proud to have drivers like him on the Greatwide team.”
