Marten Transport is equipping its fleet with GE Asset Intelligence's VeriWise trailer tracking technology with reefer monitoring to better monitor, manage, and optimize processes. The technology employs the latest cellular wireless communications and web technologies to provide an additional layer of visibility and productivity into fleet operations. Fleet managers have quick access to actionable intelligence, allowing them to make more informed decisions about controlling fleet assets.
One of the country's largest temperature-sensitive truckload carriers, Mondovi, Wisconsin-based Marten Transport operates approximately 4,200 refrigerated trailers. GE Asset Intelligence is a leading global provider of fleet management products and services for trailers, intermodal containers, and railcars.
VeriWise with reefer monitoring helps ensure that loads are safe from spoilage by providing information and warnings about refrigeration unit operation for both Carrier Transicold and Thermo King units. The technology can provide temperature and setpoint data for up to three compartments, as well as alarm conditions, fault codes, operating mode, fuel level, battery voltage, and reefer engine operating hours.
Alarms are sent via e-mail or text message immediately when they occur. The system also can store rolling temperature and setpoint history for retrieval “over the air.”
“With the VeriWise technology, Marten will have a better view of their overall trailer inventory, which will increase their fleet utilization and assist with fuel efficiency,” said Darryl Miller, chief operating officer of GE Asset Intelligence.
Working together, both companies think they can reduce reefer fuel consumption by approximately one gallon per unit each day. For an over-the road reefer carrier the size of Marten Transport, annual reefer fuel savings could be up to 8%, Miller said.
The decision to add GE's trailer management solution to the fleet also was based on both the productivity gains relative to the cost, and GE's stability and high quality of products, said Randy Marten, chief executive officer of Marten Transport.
ABI Research Group recently ranked GE Asset Intelligence the highest rated asset tracking provider in the industry.
“GE is a company that is forward thinking in its technological advancements, and we both agree that strong customer service is what sets us apart in the market,” Marten said. “So, choosing the right partner who complements our business philosophy is imperative to a successful game plan.”
