The United States Environmental Protection Agency has inducted Gwaltney of Smithfield and Smithfield Transportation Co's Smithfield Division into an EPA program for companies that exceed routine compliance with environmental laws.
The two Smithfield Foods subsidiaries are part of the EPA's Performance Track Program, which includes about 400 US companies. The program was launched in 2000 to offer regulatory incentives to companies that go beyond meeting legal requirements in energy and water usage and conservation, discharges to waterways, air emissions, waste generation, and preservation of natural resources.
As Performance Track members, Gwaltney and Smithfield Transportation are to submit annual performance reports to the EPA that show they are meeting environmental commitments. Both companies must demonstrate ongoing good-faith efforts toward continuous improvement, maintenance of their individual Environmental Management System, and a commitment to community outreach.
