Mitsui OSK Lines assists
in bringing aid supplies
to stricken areas of Japan

Mar 21, 2011 10:26 AM

Mitsui OSK Lines Ltd (MOL) is determined to provide containerships to transport aid supplies from overseas to areas of Japan stricken by the recent earthquake and tsunami. MOL has received many calls asking for help to transport aid supplies to Japan from overseas.

“We express our heartfelt sympathies to the families and friends of those who lost loved ones in the earthquake,” MOL President Koichi Muto said. “At the same time, we wish the best for the survivors of the earthquake and tsunami.”

Aid supplied will be delivered to container yards at the loading ports before the end of May 2011. As shipping capacity is limited, transport of those supplies will be on a first-come, first-shipped basis.

As another aspect of the aid effort, MOL Ferry Co Ltd, a MOL Group company, transported about 2,700 Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) personnel and about 930 emergency vehicles from Tomakomai in Hokkaido to Aomori, the capital of Aomori prefecture, on the main island of Honshu. The transport support was achieved with four ferries that made eight total trips.

In other news, MOL is upgrading its current ARN product to a fixed-day weekly service between Europe and West Africa, with connections via Antwerp for Asian and North American cargo.

The new service will launch April 6 from Hamburg, calling Thamesport, Antwerp, Dakar (Senegal), Tin Can (Nigeria), Tema (Ghana), Antwerp, Hamburg. Abidjan will also be included in the schedule when the political situation in the Ivory Coast allows.
