Washington Produce Railcar Pool growing

Dec 16, 2008 10:35 AM

Since beginning service in August 2006, the Washington Produce Railcar Pool program has been steadily growing.

A total of 410 carloads of Washington state produce have been shipped to eastern states. Program utilization grew to 70% in October 2008.

The Washington state legislature created the program to establish a pool of refrigerated railcars for the state’s agricultural community because a shortage of refrigerated railcars leaves growers with an inadequate supply during peak seasons.

Types of produce shipped through this program: frozen fruit, 75%; frozen potatoes/other vegetables, 15%; fresh onions or potatoes, 9%; and frozen seafood, 1%.

The program is funded with federal grants and state transportation funds.
