Obama appoints Hurley
as NHTSA administrator

Charles A Hurley, the leader of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), has been appointed by President Obama as administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Head of MADD since 2005, Hurley has served in senior leadership roles with the National Safety Council (NSC) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety over the past 30 years.
Besides working on drunken-driving issues, Hurley helped law enforcement officials with air bag and seat belt issues, teen driving, and child passenger safety. He aided then-state Senator Obama in 2003 in toughening Illinois’ seat belt, teen driving, child passenger safety, and racial profiling laws.
The NSC praised the nomination of Hurley.
"President Obama and Transportation Secretary (Ray) LaHood have made a terrific choice in selecting Chuck Hurley to lead NHTSA," said Janet Froetscher, president and chief executive officer of the NSC. "Chuck has a deep passion to save lives, prevent injuries, and stop the human suffering associated with traffic crashes."
