Drivers in DC better keep calls hands-free

Jul 1, 2004 12:28 PM, from staff and wire reports

The District of Colombia has outlawed use of cell phones or any other electronic device while driving, unless equipped with a hands-free accessory, effective July 1. Throughout July, officers will issue warnings to violators, while on August 1, police will be authorized to issue citations up to $100.

Cell phone use without a hands-free device while driving will be restricted to emergency situations. Additionally, initiating and terminating calls will be exempt from the law.
