New medium truck offerings debut

Apr 1, 2006 12:00 PM

Sterling Truck Corporation now has a full lineup of trucks ranging from Class 3-8 with the introduction of its new low cab-over-engine truck.

The Sterling 360 is the first model produced under the “Global Excellence” partnership with Mitsubishi Fuso in which DaimlerChrysler draws from its resources in North America, Asia, and Europe to bring new offerings to market within a much reduced timeframe.

Based on a Fuso chassis, the Sterling 360 will be sold, serviced, and financed through only Sterling dealerships. The truck will be offered with the same wheelbases as its Mitsubishi counterpart, but the option selections will be different, Martin Klein, vice-president of light-duty business said at a Work Truck Show press conference.

Special programs with upfitters are in the works to provide work-ready trucks for Sterling dealers, according to Jim Merrifield, senior vice-president of distribution.

The Sterling 360 was designed for a variety of truck body applications such as wholesale and retail services, pickup and delivery, landscaping, and construction service. A straight frame makes wheelbase changes simple, as all components can easily be slid to a new location. Plus, the fuel tanks, batteries, fuel lines, exhaust systems, crossmembers, and wiring are all efficiently tucked away and routed for easy maintenance.

Among the specs and options:

  • 4.9L turbo diesel engine with 175hp at 2700 rpm and 391 lb-ft. of torque at 1600 rpm

  • GVWRs of 14,050 lb, 14,500 lb, and 17,995 lb.

  • Wheelbases of 115", 134", 152", 164", and 176".

  • 33-gallon side mount fuel tank (standard) and 30-gallon fuel tank aft-mount between rails (optional).

The Sterling 360 will be available at select Sterling dealers across North America. Classes 4 and 5 will be rolled out in spring 2006 and Class 3 in mid-2007.
