Tyson food convoy comes
to rescue of storm victims

Sep 29, 2008 10:01 AM

Tyson Foods Inc. is supplying more than 3.2 million meals for Gulf Coast residents impacted by recent hurricanes. Twenty-six truckloads of the company’s chicken and pork will travel from Arkansas to replenish food banks in Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee, and Mississippi. The action is a part of the company’s ongoing commitment to hunger relief with Feeding America—formerly known as America’s Second Harvest.

"Helping our neighbors when disaster happens is important to us, which is why so many of the Tyson team members have organized this effort to help out in Texas and the Gulf States," said Dick Bond, president and chief executive officer of Tyson Foods.

According to Feeding America, the need for basic food assistance has overwhelmed the resources of many food banks since the recent storms. Tyson trucks carrying food donations will arrive in the Texas cities of Abilene, Amarillo, Austin, Beaumont, Corpus Christi, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Lubbock, McAllen, Odessa, San Antonio, Texarkana, Tyler, Victoria, and Wichita Falls; as well as food banks in Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, and Louisiana.

This donation brings the amount of food donated by Tyson Foods for disaster relief in 2008 to more than 1.5 million pounds—the equivalent of more than 6 million meals. Since 2000, the company has donated more than 52 million pounds of protein products to more than 950 hunger relief agencies nationwide.
