US Foodservice division
activates solar panel
system to power facility

Apr 18, 2011 10:44 AM

Reinforcing its commitment to sustainability, US Foodservice–San Francisco activated a 1.18-megawatt (MW), 4,354-photovoltaic solar panel installation. The largest rooftop and carport solar power system in Northern California, it is expected to provide 40% of US Foodservice–San Francisco’s power needs during daylight hours.

The US Foodservice division, a Bay Area Green Business-certified facility, celebrated the conversion to solar power at a special event themed “From the Sun to the Future” for local dignitaries, customers, employees, and suppliers in Livermore CA recently.

“Our new solar panel system will benefit both the environment and our bottom line,” said Phil Collins, division president, US Foodservice–San Francisco. “Sustainability is a driving force at US Foodservice, and we are continually evaluating and implementing ways to reduce our environmental impact while more efficiently serving customers.”

With a predicted output of more than 1.3 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) annually at its peak, the solar array is expected to generate enough electricity to power up to 194 average California homes for one year.

The solar panels were installed by SPG Solar. US Foodservice is leasing the solar system from Delta Electronics, a global provider of renewable energy products. The installation project provided about 70 sustainability-related jobs in the community.
