A&P rings up slightly higher sales numbers

The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co Inc (A&P) supermarket chain announced unaudited fiscal 2004 second quarter and year-to-date results for the 12 and 28 weeks ended Sept 11, 2004.

Sales for the second quarter were $2.49 billion, compared with $2.46 billion in the second quarter of fiscal 2003. Comparable store sales rose 0.1% over year-ago figures for company-operated stores, which includes a decrease of 1.0% in the United States and an increase of 3.9% in Canada.

Sales for the 28 weeks year-to-date were $5.77 billion versus $5.69 billion in fiscal year 2003. For the first half of the year, comparable store sales inched ahead 0.6%, which includes a loss of 0.2% in the United States and a gain of 3.2% in Canada.
