Spartan employees ratify labor contract

Jun 17, 2005 9:07 AM, from staff and wire reports

Spartan Stores Inc has announced the ratification of a five-year labor contract for bargaining unit warehouse employees and drivers at its Plymouth MI distribution center. The contract provides for improved scheduling flexibility and work rules that are expected to better serve customers and enhance the distribution segment’s labor productivity and operating efficiency. Contract provisions include wage increases, but also require affected employees to share in rising healthcare costs. The contract was approved by a majority of the affected bargaining unit employees.

Craig C Sturken, Spartan's chairman, president, and chief executive officer, said, “The contract is a win for all parties because it appropriately aligns the interest of shareholders, customers, and employees.”

Grand Rapids MI-based Spartan is the nation’s 10th-largest grocery distributor with warehouse facilities in Grand Rapids and Plymouth.
