Harris Teeter to acquire nine Winn-Dixie stores

Oct 1, 2005 12:00 PM

Supermarket chain Harris Teeter, a subsidiary of Charlotte NC-based Ruddick Corp, plans to acquire nine North Carolina supermarkets from a subsidiary of Winn-Dixie Stores.

Cost of this purchase is estimated at $16.75 million. Under the agreement, Harris Teeter must acquire other assets, including inventories, and take over the leases.

This transaction depends on approval from the court dealing with Jacksonville FL-based Winn-Dixie's bankruptcy case. In July, Winn-Dixie announced it planned to shut 326 stores and eliminate 22,000 jobs companywide.

The 37th-largest United States supermarket chain, Harris Teeter has 138 stores in Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, and the Carolinas.
