Wal-Mart developing RFID for forklifts

May 1, 2008 12:00 PM

Expanding incorporation of radio-frequency-identification (RFID) technology into its operations, Wal-Mart is working with forklift manufacturers to capture the potential benefits of RFID on forklifts.

Crown Equipment and Raymond, the primary suppliers of electric forklifts to Wal-Mart, have been testing RFID technologies and equipment modifications with and for Wal-Mart and others.

One of the challenges is to regulate the forklift's power so it doesn't interfere with RFID electronics. Another is giving a forklift the ability to read a specific tag.
