THERMO KING used the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Kentucky, March 25 to 27, 2004, to launch the newest additions to the SB series of wide-post trailer refrigeration units. The new units fill out the lower and middle range of the SB series capacity spectrum.
The newest of the introductions, the SB-110, is designed for regional and distribution operations. The SB-210 and SB-310 already were a part of the Thermo King inventory and have been released again with refined features following input from users. All three units now make use of the SR-2 microprocessor control system.
The new SB-110 fills out the lower range of the SB series with a simple, easy-to-operate refrigeration unit. It uses the same TK486 direct injection, four-cylinder diesel engine rated at 34 horsepower at 2,200 rpm that is used throughout the SB series. In keeping with its intended role in local and regional distribution, the SB-110 is equipped with the X426L four-cylinder compressor displacing 26 cubic inches. The X426L compressor provides refrigeration capacity of 18,000 Btu/hr at -20° F, 30,000 Btu/hr at 0° F, and 43,500 Btu/hr at 35° F. With the electronic throttling valve available as a factory installed option, capacity at 35° F can be boosted to 50,000 Btu/hr.
In general, the SB-110 is a no-frills refrigeration unit with few special features as standard equipment. However, most Thermo King options, such the electronic throttling valve, Whisper noise reduction package, remote status lamps, fuel heater, heavier 65 amp alternator, fuel level sensors, and satellite communications can be ordered with the unit from the factory.
The SB-210 and SB-310 fill the middle of the capacity range in the SB series. Both use the larger 30 cid X430L four-cylinder compressor coupled to the TK486 engine. Capacity of the SB-210 is 21,000 Btu/hr at -20° F, 32,000 Btu/hr at 0° F, and 60,000 Btu/hr at 35° F. The slightly more robust SB-310 has capacity ratings of 25,000 Btu/hr at -20° F, 37,000 Btu/hr at 0° F, and 64,000 Btu/hr at 35° F.
Refinements to the SB-210 and SB-310 include the installation of two additional temperature control sensors to enhance temperature accuracy for improved load protection. All temperature sensors are wired directly to the control system to improve system integrity.
All three units, the SB-110, SB-210, and SB-310, are equipped with Thermo King's new SR-2, second generation smart reefer control system. The new controller has been made easy to use with four dedicated keys and four menu keys. To make the system easier to use, it has been lowered eight inches on the unit case and the display is tilted down to make it easy to read under any lighting. To make the SR-2 a truly global system, the controller is loaded with software that allows the display to present messages in up to 21 different languages. Once unit operating parameters have been set, the keypad can be locked to prevent accidental temperature changes or tampering.
In addition to the new units, Thermo King also announced a new warranty program for its remanufactured SB Classic units at the Mid-America show. The Classic remanufacturing program was launched in 2002 to provide low-cost units to small fleets and owner-operators. The SB Classic units are equipped with a remanufactured 2.2-liter direct injection engine and a remanufactured X430L four-cylinder compressor. Unit capacity is 18,000 Btu/hr at -20° F, 30,000 Btu/hr at 0° F, and 43,500 Btu/hr at 35° F.
The new warranty program covers the engine, compressor, and microprocessor control system for two years. Warranty on the entire unit is one year and is backed by the entire Thermo King distribution network.
