The United States Environmental Protection Agency has inducted Gwaltney of Smithfield and Smithfield Transportation Co's Smithfield Division into an EPA program limited to companies that exceed routine compliance with environmental laws.
These two Smithfield Foods subsidiaries are members of the EPA's Performance Track Program, which includes about 400 US companies. The program was launched in 2000 to offer regulatory incentives to companies that go beyond meeting legal requirements in energy and water usage and conservation, discharges to waterways, air emissions, waste generation, and preservation of natural resources.
As Performance Track members, the Gwaltney and Smithfield Transportation facilities are expected to submit annual performance reports to the EPA that demonstrate they are meeting environmental commitments. Both companies must demonstrate ongoing good-faith efforts toward continuous improvement, maintenance of their individual Environmental Management System, and a commitment to community outreach.
