Spartan's fiscal net earnings shoot up 65.7%

Spartan Stores Inc reported financial results for its 12-week fiscal 2006 first quarter ended June 18, 2005.
The Grand Rapids MI-based grocery distributor and supermarket chain reported an increase in first-quarter net earnings from continuing operations of 65.7% to $2.8 million, compared with $1.7 million in the corresponding period a year ago. This represents the sixth consecutive quarter of year-over-year earnings improvement.
Consolidated net sales for the 12-week first quarter were $459.3 million versus $474.3 million in the corresponding 12-week period a year earlier.
