The United States House of Representatives has approved a one-month extension for federal financing of highway and transit programs through July 31, 2004, according to information from the House Transportation Committee. Authorization for funding is due to expire June 30.

This legislation (HR 4635) was approved June 23 by a 418–0 vote. It will continue paying for highway construction, highway safety, transit, motor carrier, and surface transportation research programs at levels approved in the fiscal year 2004 budget resolution.

The national highway and transit funding bill expired Sept 30, 2003, but has been extended on three previous occasions. This bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.

The House-Senate Conference Committee also met June 23 regarding the six-year highway and transit funding legislation (HR 3550), and is scheduled to meet again July 7. Forty-two provisions were agreed to by the conference committee.
