Carrier Corp will lay off 1,200 employees

Oct 6, 2003 12:00 PM, from staff and wire reports

Carrier Corp, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp, plans to shut down its manufacturing operations in DeWitt NY, eliminating 1,200 of 2,800 jobs there, according to a Syracuse (NY) Post-Standard newspaper article.

Carrier will close its container refrigeration and compressor manufacturing operations, while maintaining and possibly expanding its research and development arm.

About 1,600 jobs in Carrier's warehouse, office, engineering, and research areas will stay in DeWitt, depending on the company's collective bargaining obligations.

This decision is critical for Carrier's competitiveness and growth, says Ted Amyuni, senior vice-president of operations for Carrier. With more than 80% of container refrigeration products now shipped to Asia, Carrier has determined it should be situated closer to its markets, he said.

Carrier's container refrigeration needs will be served by its manufacturing plant in Singapore, while its compressor needs will be handed by plants operating in Georgia and China.
