FMCSA to gather data on driver fatigue

Jun 2, 2003 12:00 PM, from staff and wire reports

Driver fatigue is the subject of a survey sponsored by the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration (FMCSA), according to information published May 31 in the Federal Register. This survey, to be conducted by the Motor Freight Carriers Association (MFCA) with a federal grant, will gather information on driver physical condition, amount of sleep, use of naps, fatigue coping strategies, hours on duty, hours driving, and nature of job.

About 2,000 Teamsters drivers will be surveyed from MFCA member companies that operate trucks on overnight runs. Some of the drivers will wear actigraphy watches to monitor sleep and wake times. Click here to see the information in the Federal Register.
