FMCSA safety program undergoes an audit

Dec 1, 2003 12:00 PM, from staff and wire reports

An audit of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) motor carrier safety program has been initiated by the Department of Transportation's office of the inspector general.

This audit will address directions through the Motor Carriers Safety Improvement Act for FMCSA to reduce large-truck crashes through increased reviews of motor carriers. It also will explore stronger enforcement measures against violators of the motor carrier safety regulations.

The 1999 act also requires FMCSA to initiate safety audits for new-entrant motor carriers and to complete rulemakings associated with the motor carrier industry and the commercial driver license program.
