H J Heinz Co acquires frozen soup producer

Jun 20, 2003 12:00 PM, from staff and wire reports

The H J Heinz Co, owner of food brands including Ore-Ida frozen potatoes, announced that its Foodservice Division has acquired Seattle WA-based Truesoups LLC, a manufacturer and marketer of frozen, heat-and-serve soups. Terms of the acquisition were not released.

Heinz’s Foodservice Division, which represents about 40% of the company’s North American sales, markets branded and custom products to commercial and non-commercial food outlets and distributors.

Truesoups was founded in 1991 in Seattle. Besides its frozen soup varieties, the company produces a limited line of frozen sauces, stews, pot pies, and gravies—all provided in Cryovac plastic bag packaging.

The company operates in a two-year-old, 60,000-square-foot processing facility. Products are hot-filled and chilled on-site, then transported to a separate facility nearby for freezing and distribution.
