Market Day, a school fund-raising cooperative in Chicago IL has ordered 12 ST-CR 300 cryogenic refrigeration systems for straight truck applications. The Thermo King refrigeration units use liquid carbon dioxide as refrigerant and to power the unit fans. The order is the first sale of the units in North America. Market Day operates a fleet of 160 trucks and trailers to deliver to schools in 11 states. The company operates from a central distribution center in Chicago and five smaller distribution hubs. Market Day handles roughly 150 products and participates in fund-raising with more than 6,000 schools and community groups in 20 metropolitan areas. Participating schools and organizations earn a minimum of 10% of the purchase price of product sold by Market Day. Quieter than comparable diesel refrigeration units, the ST-CR 300 cools by circulating carbon dioxide gas through a heat exchanger and uses the power of the expanding gas to drive an air motor to move the fans. Market Day utilizes a filling station provided by Praxair to fill its cryogenic tanks with liquid carbon dioxide at 125 psi.
