NFL foots bill for special Super Bowl turf

Jan 14, 2004 12:00 PM, from staff and wire reports

A total of 35 refrigerated trucks transported custom turf to Houston TX's Reliant Stadium to be used as the playing surface for Super Bowl XXXVIII. The sod came from Casa Grande AZ and was purchased by the National Football League from West Coast Turf, according to a Houston Chronicle newspaper report.

A conventional grass field is being laid down instead of the portable tray system used by the Houston Texans for football games at the stadium. Reliant StadiumÕs playing field must stand up to the Super BowlÕs 60 minutes of football, the pre-game ceremony, and a halftime show.
