Trucks may be assigned special routes in DC

The District of Columbia government, along with federal agencies, is considering a three-tiered system of truck routes, designed to reduce traffic congestion and increase security in the United States capital region.All Class 3 trucks or largerÑor trucks with a gross vehicle weight greater than 10,000 poundsÑthat travel through or make deliveries within the district would be affected by a panelÕs recommendations. These include changes in loading zones, utility repairs in residential areas, and tour bus operations.
The study is being coordinated by a Technical Advisory Group that includes representatives from the DC Department of Transportation, DC Office of Planning, Metropolitan Police Department, DC Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, US Capitol Police, Federal Highway Administration, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and community groups.
Recommendations are in a report produced by the DC Department of Transportation and the US Department of Transportation's Volpe National Transportation Systems Center in Cambridge MA. Details are at www.ddot.dc.gov.
