Tyson brings home the bacon in fiscal 4Q

Tyson Foods Inc reported fiscal fourth-quarter 2003 sales of $6.6 billion compared with $5.8 billion for the same period a year ago. Operating income for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2003 was $308 million versus $188 million a year earlier. Earnings totaled $147 million compared with $84 million for the same period in 2002.

Sales for the 12 months of fiscal 2003 were $24.5 billion compared with $23.4 billion in fiscal 2002. Operating income for the 12 months of fiscal 2003 totaled $837 million versus $887 million a year earlier. Earnings were $337 million compared with $383 million for the same period a year earlier.

"During the year, we successfully introduced and gained share in new products across all channels," said John Tyson, chairman and chief executive officer, "including Tyson-branded consumer products in the raw and fully cooked bacon, self-serve deli meats, luncheon meats, dinner meats, canned broths, and bullions categories."
