City Harvest is converting its fleet to hybrid systems, including the Kidron Ultra Temp refrigeration system with the Emission Electric Power (LEEP) Freeze arrangement and trucks with Eaton’s parallel electric hybrid drive system, to improve efficiency, lower costs, and cut emissions.

City Harvest’s International DuraStars have an Eaton hybrid system with an Eaton Fuller UltraShift automated transmission.The system has regenerative braking to recover and store energy normally lost during braking, and use it later to improve fuel economy and vehicle performance.Plans are to convert the entire truck fleet to hybrid technology by the end of the year, “reducing fuel costs more than $98,000 per year,” says Jennifer McLean, City Harvest’s vice president of operations.
There are scheduled pickups from roughly 300 regular donors, after which food is delivered - all in the same day. Drivers are provided with full uniforms, and each truck is equipped with a hand truck and pallet jack.For visibility into truck activities, James Dunne, distribution manager, uses a mobile assets management service from Telargo that includes a temperature-monitoring system to verify temperatures during transit.
