Fleming explores selling wholesale business

Jun 16, 2003 12:00 PM, from staff and wire reports

Bankrupt Lewisville TX-based Fleming Companies Inc is considering the possible sale of its mainstay grocery wholesale business and its Coremark unit, which supplies convenience stores.

This decision comes after the food distributor’s recent loss of business from retailer Target, which tapped rival distributor Supervalu to supply its discount stores with groceries.

Fleming plans to close grocery wholesale units in Geneva AL, Lafayette LA, and Superior WI by the end of July. These closings will affect 550 employees, according to the company.
